There's only an "error": in italian we have different ways to express possibility. We translate your "may" as a request of permission ("may I go to the bathroom, teahcer?"). And that's quite easy. We have some difficulties to transate your modal verb "can" and the related "to be able to". In fact, we're naturally brought to distinguish two meanings: the former is the sense of the material "skill" to do something. E.g..: "i can read this letter"; it's an ability that I possess, in fact I have the ability of reading this letter because I have studied the alphabet and so on... This is why we (Italians ) often translate (which is not correct) this meaning of possibility with your "to be able to". In Italian we sharply distihguish this meaning by using the verb "riuscire": "riuscite a leggere ciò che scrivo?" (this is the correct translation of the second part of your message; or: "riuscite a leggere?"). [Uhm, another thing, remember that, in Italian, "you" is the second person singuar and plural: "can you?" = puoi (tu), but also "can you?" = potete (voi)]
The second meaning is that of possibility, as used, e.g., in forms of courtesy (is that expression correct? remember that if I fail to write correctly you have to point it out ): "can you open the window?". Of course the person I'm addressing to can open the window (in fact he/she possesses the material ability to open the window), but the possibility he/she may open it, it's not obvious.
